Guild Wars 2 – World versus World

PLEASE NOTE: SOME OF THE LINKS BELOW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS.

Last week, we focused on the PvE aspect of Guild Wars 2, which was a complete success.  We decided to ask our Guild’s resident WvW player to show the WvW side of Guild Wars 2 some love, and here is the result.  Enjoy.

World vs World is a Player versus Player game mode that pits three different servers against one another in open-world combat. Across four different maps, called the Eternal Battleground & the three Borderlands, hundreds of players battle for control of resources which help increase their position across the ranking system and increase their world’s stat bonuses.

Overview

This style of play brings elements from the PvE environment such as events that reward players with experience, karma and currency to those that contribute by taking supply camps, towers, or keeps. There are also drops from monsters, enemy players and numerous gathering nodes around so it can be extremely rewarding if you want something a bit different or if you’re bored with PvE. Anyone can join, even a little level 6 pain in the behind Asuran (Editors Note: I love Asuran). They will be scaled to level 80 and help create siege weapons, march with the zerg or mount fort defences to fend off those savages trying to take our resources.

Communication is key in WvW, it’s not just a numbers game. When you go up against one of the top ranked servers you will see just how lethal and unforgiving they can be.  Even a small group of organised players can hold off a large group of 50+ at key locations, just remember to fight smart and use all the professions available as they all have traits and skills to overcome any enemy.

Problems

One of the main problems in WvW from my experience is the way in which the commander rank is acquired.  There are some great commanders across all the servers and on mine (Aurora Glade) but it should never be something that you can buy, rather it should be earned. Most players will just see the commander icon and follow it around and might not accomplish anything or gain any drops due to the amount attacking the same target. A small party of guild friends or strangers can take camps, disrupt supply lines and achieve more, and gain much more, than groups of slow moving zergs going head to head.

Overall

Guild Wars 2 has done a tremendous job with WvW and hopefully we will get a few improvements in upcoming patches that will keep us engaged. The maps are beautifully designed and you can see that a lot of time, effort and thought has went into it, making it to me the most fun part of the game. So whether you’re 80 or just starting out, come join your server in WvW and help them slaughter those invaders, sending them personally to Grenth.
